Afield's article 'Transposing Afropolitan Mobilities' was published in Borderlands Journal today. The article uses speculative design to move beyond the South African government's efforts to create a 'model' refugee camp along the Mozambique-South Africa border in response to a sudden exodus of Zimbabweans into South Africa. The 'model,' though, is proximate to the borders of another kind of nation-state within a nation-state: Kruger National Park. This situation provides an opportunity to play with notions of borders that enclose more-than-humans and humans, organic and inorganic matter. Notably, the article does this with a design history of human attempts to border Southern Africa, a political ecological account of the rejection of human bordering by water systems, and diffractive watercolour drawings.
